In their readings Naike weaves these strands together. A graduate from the Portland School of Astrology, their focus lies in decolonizing astrology and connecting to the transformative liberation inherent in our natal charts.

This year’s MPM Graphic Designer, Jonni Ketcher

  • Artist, designer and enrolled member in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Jonni Ketcher grew up listening to her friends, family, and notably her grandfather tell her the stories of her tribe. In 2017, after she’d moved to Portland, she was missing Indigenous spaces and a friend offered to share part of his jewelry booth at the NAYA marketplace. She had only three old prints to offer, but from the first market she felt uncharacteristically energized by a crowd who enjoyed not only her artwork but the stories as well.

A self described introvert, Jonni has said that she’d rather make art than socialize. But when it comes to her work, most of it representing her grandfather’s stories, she felt especially energized by sharing them as they'd been shared with her. A friend once said she gets good medicine from sharing the stories behind her art.

These days, her art is in several local shops, she continues to do markets, and she takes contracts as an illustrator. People are drawn to her bold colors, graphic lines, and narrative themes. Jonni says she tries to focus her work in ways that share Native narratives since Indigenous people have so often had their narratives taken from them or obscured due to colonization, appropriation and capitalism. Being Indigenous is often recognizing you are part of a greater whole—it's her hope that her work inspires younger generations to chase their passions and share their voice.

In making the logo for My People’s Market’s 5th birthday, she said that she wanted to include hands since the market centers makers, and that she chose Mt. Hood to be the central focal point because of the importance the mountain has for the people of the Pacific Northwest. The diamond shape anchors the logo and other fall themes, providing balance and drawing the eye back up to Mt. Hood.

land acknowledgement

Artist Jonni Ketcher

"If I was going to do a land acknowledgment, I felt it important to draw upon the same land that makes this region so famous. I was born in Washington, and since moving back to the Northwest, I've been inspired again by its breathtaking mountains, the variety of flora, and the rivers that flow through it all. I wanted you to be able to find hints of that within the design." –Jonni Ketcher
