Unit Souzou: Unit Souzou was founded in 2014 by Co-directors Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe, relentless innovators at the forefront of a growing artistic movement within the taiko community. ‘Souzou’ can be written in three ways meaning ‘creation’ (創造), ‘imagination’ (想像), or ‘noisy’ (騒々), alluding to a force by which new ideas are born and take shape in the world. Inspired by these words, the mission of Unit Souzou is to build creative, imaginative works while honoring the history and roots of the taiko art form. The core of Unit Souzou’s artistic voice is personal and authentic, sound shaped and inspired by form and by movement. The essence of Unit Souzou is an expressive blend of taiko and Japanese folk dance, forging new traditions for evolving communities.

This year’s MPM Graphic Designer
Jordynn Alexander, the designer behind the September 2022 My People’s Market art, brought her own experiences, her Caribbean heritage, and the feeling of the market itself into making this beautiful representation of our next market.
“The inspiration behind the artwork was an emphasis on people and the liveliness that MPM brings each time through different cultures coming together.”
The illustration includes 8 My People’s Market Vendors from left to right: Rajiv from Plant Bomb; Lluvia from Indigenous Come Up; Ambrosia from The Lamb Boutique; Shiny from Scrapberry Farm; Holly from Sibeho; Reem from Hadoutta; Alshiref fromAmity PDX; and Kamelah from Mimi’s Fresh Tees.
-
Her work relies on her own memories of growing up in Miami, a place that was colorful, vibrant, and diverse. As a designer, she mixes these roots with the natural beauty of Portland, where she has lived since she was a teenager.
Jordynn graduated from the PSU school of Art + Graphic Design in 2017, and has been working as an independent designer ever since.
In addition to illustration, she has a passion for sneakers, apparel, urban streetwear, and using her creative voice to uplift people of color and the LGBTQ community. She’s previously collaborated with Adidas and is known for the hand-lettered “DON’T SHOOT” bus bench collaboration with Living Room Realty.
Strong threads of purpose, history, identity and amplifying community voices run throughout her work. As an artist, she says “a strong community is what I am conveying.”
Jordynn is available for illustration work, logo design, apparel and footwear concepting, as well as fine art and activism work. She lives in North Portland, where she feels inspired by the historically Black neighborhoods and the beautiful architecture and art.
